The Children's Safety Village - Belleville is a community resource used primarily for teaching street safety skills to elementary school children in grades 2, 3 & 4. New this fall we will be expanding our programming to offer Internet Safety and Fire Safety.
Built in 2004 with the support of the City, Quinte Home Builders Association and the tireless efforts of then Deputy Chief, Brian Harder - over 150 local businesses, service organizations and individuals contributed either time, money or both to build the Village. We are the only Safety Village in Eastern Ontario and we have welcomed classes from Hastings, Prince Edward and Lennox & Addington Counties.

The goal of the Children's Safety Village - Belleville is to reduce the amount of preventable traffic accidents among young children in Grades 2, 3 and 4 through interactive based education. Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 9. Most children learn about safety in the classroom - you might remember your safety lessons about "Elmer" and locals may recall Safety Officer Sgt. Robert Hall from the Belleville Police Department attending classes in our schools.
Inspired by other communities that had committed to making an investment in the safety of their youth, a number of people joined together to make it a reality. Their efforts were remarkable and classes started coming to the Village in 2005 and since then over 10,000 little feet have walked our streets.
Classes are booked through the Belleville Police Service and taught by a uniformed police officer. Children attend a 1.5 hour training program; starting in the classroom then applying what they've learned in the Village. Grade 2 students practice by walking, Grade 3 students get to use battery powered jeeps and the Grade 4 program focuses on bicycle safety. Little feet love our little streets and a visit to the Village is remembered fondly for years by the children who have visited.
The Village also hosts a few public events each year where we welcome the community to walk through and meet our Villagers. Halloween and Christmas "in the Village" are annual traditions with treats, crafts, songs and fun attract hundreds of children and their families each year. In 2016, we participated in Doors Open in partnership with Heritage Belleville - giving children and their families little historical tidbits about the type of businesses we host in the Village. Check out our Calendar of Events to see what's coming up soon!
The Children's Safety Village - Belleville is a registered charity and was built completely through the donations of members within the community. Located on land donated by the City, we are thankful to have such an incredible resource in our region. We continue to be supported by the Belleville Police Service and the QHBA have remained strong partners.
The Village is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Safety Village has recently launched a Revive the Village campaign to raise money to cover the operating and maintenance costs. If you're interested in knowing more or how you can help, please Contact us.
